July 2006 KLCS-TV/DT Pioneers Digital Media Classroom Paradigm with StreamZ
broadcast channel are encoded at 400x300 resolution at 1Mb/s. SDI video (with embedded audio) out of KLCS' Omneon Spectrum media server system is fed into two dual-channel Digital Rapids StreamZ 2500 servers, providing simultaneous, real-time encoding of the four discrete channels. The output streams from the StreamZ servers are sent to a Windows 2000 Enterprise Server, which distributes them as multicasts. The Skyscraper system from Triveni Digital employs statistical multiplexing to insert the Windows Media data into the existing over-the-air digital broadcast stream. On the receiving end, Popkin leveraged the schools' existing network infrastructures to bring the video to the desktops. The over-the-air signal is fed from a school’s TV tower to a PC server equipped with a DTV receiver card, and the school's general-purpose LAN is used to distribute the streams within the schools.
"Digital Rapids' StreamZ encoders enabled us to implement our vision with the quality that we wanted to achieve," concludes Popkin. "They’re the best-kept secret in broadcast."
