In August 2008, Italy’s national broadcaster, Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI), performed the live encoding and streaming of the Beijing Games for their online coverage with Digital Rapids’ StreamZ encoders.
The streams were distributed via RaiNet, which was created by RAI in 1999 to provide internet web portals to allow users to access RAI’s television channels.
For the Summer Games RAI needed reliable encoders to stream six live channels, outputting to Windows Media (WMV9) for viewing through their Microsoft Silverlight powered interface. RAI's objective was to cover six different locations, giving complete coverage to sports which are not usually broadcast on regular TV channels due to the simultaneity of the events. Four dual-channel DRC-Stream encoding systems were used -- three for the live streaming with one as backup. The Digital Rapids encoders received SDI embedded signals directly from video routers in the broadcasting centre in Beijing, with the resulting streams delivered directly to RAI’s Summer Games portal.
