Korea Telecom (KT)
"We needed the highest possible video quality at high bit rates and a system that was reliable and easy to use. Digital Rapids is the solution that best does this."
KT is Korea's leading telecommunication's company. Although KT was a late bloomer in the highspeed Internet market, it was ranked first in the domestic industry in June 2000, a year after starting their operations. Its high-speed Internet service subscribers exceeded 1 million in March 2001. This was a first in Korea. KT secured more than 4 million subscribers in March 2002 for the first time in the history of high-speed Internet. KT surpassed its own record by posting 5 million subscribers in January 2003, which has catapulted KT into the world's best broadband service provider.
Part of KT's broadband service is to provide it's customers with the highest possible quality streaming solution. KT uses the Windows Media 9 codec to stream at a data rate of 2Mpbs and frame rate of 30fps. To find the right solution KT evaluated all products on the market over a seven month period carrying out the most stringent tests and field trials after which KT announced Digital Rapids as their preferred solution.
Digital Rapids project representative, Mr. Shin, Marketing Director for Digibase said "The main determining factors for choosing Digital Rapids were that we needed the highest possible video quality at high bit rates and a system that was reliable and easy to use. Digital Rapids is the solution that best does this. The hardware pre-processing de-interlacing and 3D noise reduction helps to achieve images of near DVD quality that we can deliver over the internet to our customers."
KT purchased ten StreamZ-2500 servers for the first phase of the project which went live on the 2nd October to some 300,000 subscribers. Their viewing audience will steadily increase in the coming months as they expand their streaming operations not only for the domestic consumer market but also into corporations, education facilities and government departments.
