July 9, 2004 Standing Room Only at The Desktop HD Tour at The Hospital in London
London, UK: The Desktop HD Tour hit London last night and was an immediate sell-out. The event, which was held at London multimedia facility The Hospital, was heavily oversubscribed with standing room only and a waiting list.
Conceived by Adobe and Microsoft to show that it is possible to do straight HD editing at the desktop on a standard PC, the evening featured key industry speakers, including compression guru Ben Waggoner and BEAM.TV’s Ben Smith, with demonstrations of HD desktop editing from Matrox and Adobe, running on systems from Boxx Technology. There was also Windows Media 9 HD encoding and delivery by Digital Rapids.
Digital Rapids, who provide encoders to Microsoft’s MSNBC service, demonstrated a shared workstation with playback unit playing selections through Windows Media 9 HD via their StreamZHD system. StreamZHD is a turnkey system that includes CarbonHD hardware and StreamZHD software, which can capture, encode, transcode, and deliver media in multiple formats: HD or SD video in its native format or format converted on the fly, to any other HD or SD format, uncompressed, lossless or lossy compressed, 8 or 10-bit, or high quality transcoded media.
BEAM.TV provides a centralised on-line approvals service for leading advertising agencies, including Saatchi and Ogilvy Mathers. Dailies and rushes from new advertising campaigns are encoded by Digital Rapids’ StreamZ encoders, and sent to the BEAM.TV servers.
The agencies have a ‘beambox’, comprising a Microsoft Embedded Windows XP workstation with network connectivity on one side and simple keyboard remote control and widescreen TV on the other, enabling them to call up and view any clips they choose.
